  21. QUESTION:  Is it possible to treat vaginal and urinary tract infections with
  22. just one dose of medicine?

  26. ANSWER:  Many vaginal and urinary tract infections can be treated with one
  27. dose of medication, but not all.  This is an important development because
  28. these infections are among the most common conditions seen by physicians, and
  29. one dose treatments greatly reduce costs and the risk of side effects.
  30.      Single dose treatments can be used in four types of genitourinary
  31. infections:  candidal vulvovaginitis (yeast vaginitis), trichomonal vaginitis,
  32. bacterial vaginosis, and cystitis.  In candidal vulvovaginitis, 89% of women
  33. treated with one vaginally administered dose of clotrimazole were cured.
  34. Similar cure rates were found with other medications for bacterial vaginosis,
  35. trichomonal vaginitis, and the bladder infection cystitis.
  36.      The drawback to a single dose treatment is that it may not clear up every
  37. case.  Still, for uncomplicated cases of genitourinary infections, single dose
  38. treatments should be considered.
